Danvers, Massachusetts, located just northwest of Salem, was formerly known as “Salem Village” in the 17th century when the witchcraft hysteria of 1692 occurred.  Although Salem, Massachusetts receives historical name credit of being the location of the witchcraft hysteria, the nearby city of Danvers is where it all began, while Salem was where the victims were tried and executed, hung or pressed, in the circumstance of Giles Corey.  Today, visitors will find several remaining attractions in Danvers, to enhance their overall visit to the “Witch City” Salem, during Halloween.

Near Sonesta Select Boston Danvers, you will find the Rebecca Nurse Homestead.  Rebecca Nurse is known historically as one of the last victims of the witchcraft hysteria.  The Rebecca Nurse Homestead, now owned by the Danvers Alarm List company, a volunteer non-for-profit reenactor of the Revolutionary War, was built circa 1678. It had many additions and renovations over the years until it was historically restored and became a dedicated museum in 1909.  In 1975, Danvers listed the Nurse property and other areas of Salem Village on the National Register of Historical Places.

In addition to the Rebecca Nurse Homestead, Danvers maintains the parsonage foundations where Rev. Parris resided and where then slave Tituba, from the Caribbean, told stories of witchcraft to the Puritans. This started the mass hysteria, where 23 innocent souls were lost.  These foundations are found behind several homes off current Centre St in Danvers.   Danvers also maintains a memorial to victims of the witchcraft hysteria, on Hobart Street, across the street from the original meeting house of Salem Village, where many of the accusations of witchcraft took place.  The memorial is the first of its kind to honor all the victims of the 1692 hysteria.  The memorial seeks to remind all that “each generation must confront intolerance and “witch hunts” with integrity, clear vision and courage.”
