October 15-19, Haunted Fables at The Gables returns for a third year of performances. Join Salem’s master storyteller for a frightful evening of thrills and chills. Mr. Hawthorne will perform his most frightening tales, as well as the terrifying works of fellow writer Edgar Allan Poe. Stories include The House of the Seven Gables, The Cask of Amontillado, Annabel Lee, Young Goodman Brown, The Raven, and more. Experience the greatest Gothic horror stories ever written, brought to life by one of the authors himself!
On October 17, Mr. Hawthorne will host his annual Halloween Bash! This is an exclusive costume party to celebrate the spooky season. Dress up in your Halloween best as you wander the gardens of The House of the Seven Gables and mingle with Hawthorne and his famous characters. Dance the night away to Doctor Gasp and the Eeks, the spookiest band on the North Shore. Nothing is more magical than an October evening on The Gables’ seaside campus!
Nathaniel Hawthorne is portrayed by Michigan-based actor Paul Riopelle. Riopelle’s credits comprise lead roles off-Broadway, including Edwin Booth in The Brothers Booth and Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing. In 2013, he received the Oscar Wilde Award for Best Shakespearean Performance in Michigan for his turn as Mark Antony in Antony and Cleopatra. Paul began writing for the theatre in 2003, combining his love for classic literature and the stage into several theatrical productions. His writing credits include A Dickens Tea, An Evening with Charles Dickens, Three By Poe, and more.
Riopelle first fell in love with Salem on a tourist trip in 2001, and he returned to vacation there nearly every year afterwards. His growing affection for the town, coupled with his deep love for the work of author Nathaniel Hawthorne, led him to create a one-man biographical show for The House of the Seven Gables called Meet Nathaniel Hawthorne. After two extended runs in 2018, the show toured Hawthorne’s former homes The Wayside and The Old Manse. Haunted Fables at The Gables premiered in 2023.
