St. Peter’s Church Historic Presentations & Tours

Discover St. Peter’s Church, a hidden gem in the heart of the city, rich with 300 years of Salem history. From the 283-year-old bell high in the tower to our benefactor Philip English, wrongly-accused of witchcraft in 1692 and buried under the chapel, St. Peter’s is the oldest Salem church that still gathers in the spot upon which it was founded. Assailed during the Revolutionary War, and key participant in the annual National Guard muster, among our parishioners were Nathaniel Bowditch, sea captains, slaves, and Jonathan Pue, who inspired Hawthorne’s novel The Scarlet Letter.
