When you think of a witch, what kind of person do you imagine? It may be the image of a witch that Hollywood has conjured, but throughout most of history, it has often been women at the fringes of society and those unwilling to follow societal norms who have been cast as witches. A popular bumper sticker quotes historian Laurel Thatcher Ulrich: “Well-behaved women seldom make history.” Today many women embrace the names of witches or bitches as we embrace being strong and assertive women, unwilling to be held to outdated standards. Join us as we explore the stories of some Beverly women who did indeed make history, and shed some modern day light on their achievements. Tour is approximately 1.5 miles, space limited. $12; $5 HB members
