Hear the fascinating story of this port community and its people, their connections to the sea, the endeavors that made this place a global center for the trade of goods and ideas, and what that trade meant for the social and physical landscape of Salem.
Join historian Donald Friary for a 45-minute walking tour of the Salem Maritime National Historic Park. This tour will introduce visitors to the working waterfront in the Great Age of Sail and to the great merchants, ship captains, mariners, and widows who lived close by so that they could observe all the maritime activity that made Salem a major American port. Derby Wharf and its shops and ships and the Custom House tell the story of maritime activity that in one year enabled Salem to collect more U. S. customs revenue than any other American port. The Elias Hasket Derby and Elizabeth Crowninshield Derby House and nearby mansions show the splendor in which the great merchants and ship captains lived, while the backstreet Narbonne House reveals the modesty that characterized the lives of the workers who made the port and the community possible.
