Events during Salem Haunted Happenings will entertain children and adults
alike. Many of the activities are free and handicapped accessible. Nathaniel's
in the Hawthorne Hotel features Children's Brunches throughout October.
They can come dressed up, decorate their own pumpkins and receive special
treats. On Halloween there will be free adult and family costume parties
and contests with cash prizes for the winners. A pumpkin carving demonstration
by local art students, a pie-eating contest, and 21+ Halloween parties
will also be among the many festivities taking place during America's
Halloween Festival.

| Thursday, October 4 |
The Haunted Happenings Grand Parade is a Salem tradition that brings out the entire city and surrounding communities to kick off the Haunted Happenings season. It is filled with pageantry, music and the enthusiasm of thousands of Salem's students from kindergarten to college. This year's parade theme is "The Wizard of Oz". |

Mayor Kim Driscoll, in partnership with Salem's attractions and museums, welcomes Salem residents to "Mayor's Night Out in Salem." Salem residents, with ID, are admitted free to attractions, museums & free parking in the East India Mall garage after 4pm. Look for "Mayor's Night Out" sign on the door of participating businesses.
Also, join Mayor Driscoll for trick-or-treating at the East India Fountain at 5:30pm. We will trick-or-treat down the Essex Street Pedestrian Mall to shops and new this year, to the Common through the PT Cruiser car exhibition. Trick-or-Treat Bags provided. Costumes are encouraged. |

PT Cruisers will be on display. Come check out what accessorizing truly means! At 3pm, awards will include the best tailgate display, best neon display, best flames, best graphics, & best interior. This is the first time Salem has hosted this event. Don't miss this new addition to our Haunted Happenings festivities. |
Costumed presenters will portray Puritan colonists. Enjoy a tour as you learn about life in the 17th century. This program is funded in part by a grant from the Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities, a state program of the National Endowment for the Humanities. |

An outdoor Halloween costume contest for dogs and cats. The Official Cat of Salem will be chosen (must be a Salem cat resident). Owners will be asked to tell our judges why their cat should win. Prizes for the winners. Registration fee $5. Cat registration begins at 10:00am and contest begins at 10:30am. Dog registration begins at noon and contest starts at 1:00pm. |
